Ancient Historical research tells us that before Israel was Israel, it was the land of the Canaanites, called Canaan around 3,000-2,500BCE. Now, monotheism isn’t a big thing at this point and the ancient people of the Levant, which would be that Israel/ / Palestine region today, were a polytheistic society. Their main God was El, the supreme father God, and if you take it back to pre-Hebraic times, it's believed that the word Israel means El strives, or El rules, somewhere along those lines, so even the name Israel began with ancient roots to El, not yet Yahweh. Yahweh was essentially tied to storms, war and wilderness as a God varying based on tradition.
