The Minotaur represents something deeper than a monster trapped inside a labyrinth. To the Greeks, the labyrinth was a symbol of the human mind and the Minotaur was the beast trapped in the center of that maze. This piece is a symbol of the beast we create inside of us through the imprisonment of our minds.

Short Story

The Minotaur story begins with King Minos, king of Crete, praying to Poseidon for a sign that he had the right to rule. Poseidon answered by sending him the most beautiful white bull from the sea with instructions to sacrifice the bull back to the god. King Minos decided to keep the bull and sacrifice a lesser bull instead. As punishment, Poseidon caused Minos’s wife Pasiphae to become obsessed with the sacred bull, resulting in the birth of the Minotaur, a creature with the head of a bull and body of a man. Minos had Daedalus construct a labyrinth to trap the Minotaur, leaving the possibility of escape nearly impossible. King Minos forced Athens to send tributes to Crete, which would become food for the Minotaur. Then came Theseus, the prince of Athens, who volunteered as tribute to free his people from the tyranny of Minos. Ariadne secretly gave Theseus a ball of thread, which he tied to the entrance. Theseus ventured into the maze, where he came face to face with the Minotaur and killed it. Afterward, he used the thread to find his way back out of the maze.

Inspiration

The Minotaur never asked to be born.
